I added custom domains to 5 of my 50 tool sites on Netlify free tier, and it works perfectly. You need to add a CNAME record to your DNS provider, and Netlify issues a free SSL certificate automatically.
The only limit is 1 custom domain per site on free tier. If you want multiple domains, you have to upgrade to the $19/month plan.
If you have a custom domain, use Netlify free tier. The SSL is free, and the setup takes 10 minutes.
