Play Snake in Your Browser — Free, No Download, Touch Controls on Mobile

Snake is one of those games that never gets old. The rules are simple, the challenge is real, and every run ends with a small lesson in patience. The browser version at Ultimate Tools is the closest thing to the original — no download, no signup, just open and play.

Play it now: Snake game online — free, works on desktop and mobile.

How to play

Desktop:

  • Arrow keys or WASD to change direction
  • The snake moves continuously — you only control turns
  • Eat the red apple to grow longer and score points
  • Hit a wall or your own tail → game over

Mobile:

  • Swipe in any direction to turn
  • On-screen arrow buttons also available below the game area

How difficulty scales

The snake starts slow. Every 5 apples eaten, the speed increases by one step. There are multiple speed tiers — by the time you've eaten 25 apples, the snake moves fast enough that one wrong move ends the run.

This means the game has two distinct phases:

  1. Early game — slow enough to plan routes, focus on coverage
  2. Late game — fast enough that muscle memory matters more than strategy

Scoring

Each apple is worth 10 points. Speed doesn't affect the points per apple — eating 5 apples at high speed gives the same score as eating 5 at low speed. Your personal best is saved automatically in your browser's local storage. Clearing the cache resets it.

Strategy: how to last longer

Don't hug walls early. Beginners instinctively circle the edges. This works until the snake is long enough to cut off its own escape route. Instead, move through the middle until the snake is long, then use walls as guides.

Think one move ahead, not the current position. By the time you react to where the apple is, the snake has already moved. Anticipate where it will be in 2–3 moves.

Treat the tail as a boundary. The most common death is turning into your own tail. Before turning, quickly check whether the space you're turning into will be clear by the time the head gets there.

Save tight spaces for later. If you can eat an apple with a wide path or a tight path, take the wide one. Tight corridors that look fine now become traps as the snake grows.

High score tips

The highest scores come from consistent mid-speed play, not from rushing. Dying at speed tier 3 with 40 apples eaten beats surviving 60 apples if you die on apple 61. Steady movement beats erratic dodging every time.

Once you hit speed tier 4 or 5, the game rewards pattern recognition — you'll start to sense where safe turns are before consciously thinking it through. That's when the scores climb fast.

Why browser Snake beats app Snake

No ads between runs. Die, press restart, go again immediately. Mobile snake apps almost universally interrupt runs with interstitial ads — the browser version has none.

No permissions. No location access, no contact sync, no notifications. It runs in a browser tab and does nothing outside of it.

Same on every device. The game works identically on a laptop, phone, and tablet. Touch controls on mobile are fully responsive — the swipe zones are large enough to use reliably in a fast-paced run.

The full Snake game is free to play at Ultimate Tools — no login, no download. More arcade games on the same site: Flappy Bird, Brick Breaker, and Whack-a-Mole.
