I struggle with persistent back problems from sitting at a computer all day

Like many programmers — and I suspect I'm not alone here — I struggle with persistent back problems from sitting at a computer all day. But it's not just my back: I honestly don't know how to take care of my spine properly, let alone manage my overall health as a developer. Between deadlines, long coding sessions, and zero ergonomic awareness, I feel like I'm falling apart slowly. What practical, actionable advice do you have for someone who sits 10+ hours a day? How do I protect my back, build healthy habits without disrupting my workflow, and actually stay on top of my physical and mental health as a programmer?

This is honestly one of the most underrated problems in software engineering because developers treat pain like “part of the job” until their body files a production incident 😅. The biggest improvements usually come from small consistent habits: standing up every 45–60 minutes, walking for even 2 minutes, fixing monitor height, and strengthening your core/back instead of only stretching. A good chair helps, but posture changes and movement matter far more than expensive ergonomic gear alone. One thing that helped me a lot was treating physical health like system maintenance — if you ignore warnings long enough, downtime eventually becomes unavoidable. Also, mental fatigue and physical pain feed each other more than most people realize, especially during long debugging sessions and deadline pressure. You’re definitely not alone in this, and the fact you’re thinking about it now is already a good sign. Feel free to check my profile website and reach out — always happy to discuss developer health, productivity, and sustainable engineering habits.
